Filmed on Nikon D5500 and Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens. Once we arrived in Singapore from our Silkair flight, we decided to go to the Private Room to enjoy some dinner and champagne. Since it was a day time flight and less than 9 hours, we did not receive the beautiful and luxurious Salvatore Ferrigamo amenity kit. I always like how professional looking and well groomed every crew member on Singapore is. They really are meticulous in their makeup and grooming because to me they always look immaculate and flawless. The first class crew on this flight was average for Singapore in terms of the service, which means they were great but not as approachable as the other Singapore crew I had met. Oddly, I was told that the first class crew requested the mainland Chinese FA working in business class to come by to check up on us. The Chinese FA was very sweet and said that if there are any problems we should let her know. She came by to check up on us a few times during the flight and we did have a couple of quick chats. She also spent time helping me with the duty free purchases. She was definitely a very passionate and professional FA, but it seemed like the first class crew relegated their tasks to her because I did not see them anymore afterwards until they were doing their cabin checks for landing. She definitely tried her best and I really appreciated that. On my Singapore business class flight the year prior, I had an extremely charming crew lead by a purser who constantly came around to fill drinks without asking. As long as you were drinking, he would refill it without asking. During my prior Suite experience, I met a young purser who personally came by to talk to me about his love of planes and food. Singapore has very unique and passionate crew members, and on Singapore I actually look forward to meeting their crews. Food-wise, I use Book the Cook and ordered the Chilean Sea Bass which was excellent. The fish was cooked perfectly and the mussels were some of the freshest I ever had. It is definitely one of the better Book the Cook meals I have had. The mango cheesecake was beautifully presented and excellent as well. Overall it was a delicious flight filled with lots of food and drinks in one of the most luxurious cabins in the sky. Mandarin/Nat Private charity homes for the handicapped are starting to emerge in China to compensate for a shortfall in government-funded centres. Places are filled quickly, with a register of more than ten (m) million children with disabilities. Medical specialist Li Qiucun who's set up a private charity centre in Beijing is appealing for more government help. For the children of Qiucun Charity Centre it's a big day. Parents and guests have arrived for a special performance - a chance for the children to show how much they've learnt. But it's also an exhibition of sorts, to promote the successes being achieved in this privately run care centre. UPSOUND: Children singing. UPSOUND: (Mandarin) "I'm from Guangxi, my name is Wang Hao, I'm eight" "I'm from Beijing, my name is Li Xiaolong, I'm six." SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "Every year, I have to make a profit by running my business. I keep financing my charity course with the profit to keep it progressing. This is called supporting my medical service with business. (cutaways) The children unable to go to school need help, single elders need help, too many people need help. It's unrealistic to rely on the social donation" SUPER CAPTION: Li Qiucun, Director of Qiucun Charity Centre and Qiucun Company 42-year-old Li Qiucun is a Chinese medical specialist and a private entrepreneur. He founded this Charity Centre in Beijing to try to meet an escalating demand for care for handicapped children, which he says is being ignored by the government. According to Li the government only gave him moral support for his centre, no funding at all. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "Now we feel that the government and other relevant parts of society are caring very little about charity affairs." SUPER CAPTION: Jin Minxiu, Vice-director of Qiucun Charity Centre The centre is located on the ground floor of this building. Here 55 mentally handicapped children are being cared for by 23 nursing staff. To keep the charity centre running Li donates more than 200-thousand yuan every year (U-S 25-hundred dollars). The centre charges parents an up-front fee of 200-350 yuan (U-S 25-40 dollars), with an additional cost of twice this amount for caring for their individual child. For staff the children come first. Li readily admits the idea behind his "open day" was to arouse people's sympathy for the children. He now hopes the government will offer its support for this and other charity centres. These companies are blamed for illegally intercepting and detaining petitioners from going to Beijing in hopes of resolving their grievances. The campaign's effectiveness remains to be seen though, because many of the security firms are working with authorities to keep petitioners away from Beijing. Beijing police have launched a six-month campaign to crackdown on security firms that run black jails. These are illegal facilities used for detaining petitioners who want to appeal to central authorities in Beijing. Beijing has over 300,000 civilian security personnel, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. More than half are hired by unlicensed security companies. They often work with local authorities from around China to intercept petitioners before they reach the State Bureau of Letter and Calls—the central authority tasked with handling petitioners' complaints. Xinhua says the campaign is meant to stamp out the practice of intercepting petitioners. It's also supposed to stop the operation of black jails—notorious for mistreating petitioners. The effectiveness of the campaign remains to be seen, though. According to a group of petitioners who were detained in a black jail over the weekend, it's the authorities—not private security firms—who are stopping their efforts. [Jin Yuehua, Shanghai Petitioner]: "There are a lot of us here at Beijing's Jiu Jing Zhuang (black jail). There are at least 50 cars here, all belonging to the Legislative Affairs Office. The police were removing us from one of their events." A petitioner from Fuzhou believes the campaign is just a publicity stunt. He once reported the illegal practices at a black jail to Beijing authorities, but says his complaints were ignored. [Lin Yingqiang, Petitioner]: "They're only humoring the public. This is just for propaganda. Those behind the black jails are the officials of various local government departments. They're the ones in power, no one cares if we report on them." The Chinese regime views the country's millions of petitioners as a threat to its efforts to maintain social stability. They're often rounded up and sent back to their hometowns by local authorities, whose performance reviews can be affected by the number of petitioners from their jurisdiction.
